What is Botox?
Botox is a prescription-only drug. It is commonly known as botulinum toxin which is a neurotoxic protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum. It is a purified form of the toxin and used in small doses is very safe.
How does it work?
In small doses, Botox can be used for cosmetic reasons and works by blocking signals from the nerves to muscles which prevent an injected muscle from contracting which in turn creates a smooth, wrinkle-free appearance. Botox injections are one of, if not the most popular cosmetic procedures nationwide.
Who is not suitable for Botox?
Botox is not recommended to anyone under the age of 18 or over the age of 65 and is contraindicated in people with neuromuscular disorders, those taking certain muscle relaxants, pregnant women, women who are breastfeeding, people with bleeding disorders and anyone who has suffered a previous allergic reaction to the toxin.
How long does Botox last?
The effects of Botox are temporary, lasting anywhere from 3-6 months depending on various factors. Most patients will see results last 12 weeks however, research has shown natural muscle activity can return gradually as early as 8 weeks post-treatment. Botox is not a “one fits all” treatment and needs to be tailored to suit individual needs.
When will I see the results? Are they instant?
No. The results of Botox are not instant. Botox actively works for two weeks following initial treatment. Most patients will see results as quickly as 72 hours however no two people are the same and we advise that you allow two weeks before we decide on any top-up requirements. Every patient will be offered a review appointment at Miss P Aesthetics. Any top-up required will be done at this time. Receiving an unnecessary top-up WILL NOT prolong your results. This is one of the biggest misconceptions of Botox. Chucking in “Bucket Loads” will not extend longevity and is dangerous.
How long will treatment last?
The procedure itself will last 30 minutes maximum. A consultation is advised before your treatment. This allows time to thoroughly talk through any concerns, expectations, medical history, and any possible side effects. A consultation at Miss P Aesthetics is free of charge with no pressure to book a follow up unless you’re completely comfortable and have all adequate information regarding the procedure.
Are Botox and fillers the same?
Botox and Dermal Fillers are not the same. Botox is used to temporarily paralyse facial muscles to prevent or improve facial fine lines and wrinkles. They work very well in eradicating lines caused by dynamic facial movement. Botox does not remove wrinkles forever. It simply pauses the movement for 3-6 months creating a youthful, fresh glow. Dermal filler is made up of hyaluronic acid which is a substance that is naturally produced by our bodies. It is injected beneath the surface of the skin to add volume and fullness. Depending on how your body reacts a dermal filler should last anywhere between six to eighteen months.
